The Great Chase

The Great Chase Series helps raise money for community groups supporting people with intellectual and physical disabilities.  In 2009, The Great Chase Series was in its seventh successful year, pairing community organisations with dogs entered in events across regional Victoria and metropolitan greyhound tracks.

In 2008, Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Rob Hulls stated that "in Victoria, racing is about community, bringing people together and providing important community facilities, especially in country areas."

“The Great Chase is a fantastic example of how racing can provide benefits for those members of our communities who are not traditionally associated with racing.”

Funds are generated for participating groups through a series of heats, semi-finals and a grand final. When a group’s dog scores a win during the series, that organisation also receives prize money.

“Events such as the Great Chase Series encourage racing clubs and other community-based sporting bodies to consider creative ways to raise their profile and to ensure people with disabilities can participate as equal members of their communities,” Mr Hulls said.

“Not only can these community groups use the opportunity to raise much-needed funds, we can also guarantee many fantastic nights out."

All Victorian clubs participate in the three-week series, involving around 300 greyhounds and 140 community groups catering for the intellectually or physically disabled. Twenty-four TAB outlets also support the event.
